The annual Chardham Yatra, one of India’s most significant Hindu pilgrimages, has officially commenced for 2026. As per tradition, the pilgrimage began during the last week of April, with the ceremonial opening taking place on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

Gangotri
Located at an altitude of over 3,400 metres in Uttarkashi district, Gangotri is considered the origin point of the sacred River Ganga. The temple, built from white granite, was constructed by Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. Gomukh, the actual glacier source of the Ganges, lies approximately 19 kilometres from the temple.
Kedarnath
The portals of Kedarnath Dham were opened on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, amid the chanting of Vedic hymns and traditional rituals. Situated in the Himalayan ranges at a high altitude, Kedarnath is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva and remains a major spiritual destination for devotees.
Badrinath
The sacred doors of Badrinath Dham are set to open on Thursday, April 23, 2026, marking the beginning of the pilgrimage season for thousands of devotees. Situated in the picturesque Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Badri Narayan.
As one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism, Badrinath holds immense spiritual significance. It is considered the final and most important destination of the revered Chardham Yatra, attracting pilgrims from across India and around the world every year.
Mandatory Registration and Digital Monitoring
To ensure better crowd management and security arrangements, the Uttarakhand government has made online registration compulsory for all pilgrims through its official portal and mobile application. Entry into temple premises is not permitted without valid registration.
A major feature introduced this year is a digital tracking system. Registered pilgrims are being issued QR codes or e-passes, which must be scanned at designated checkpoints throughout the Chardham yatra.
Health and Safety Measures
Considering the high-altitude terrain, low oxygen levels and difficult trekking Chardham Yatra routes, medical screening has been made mandatory for pilgrims visiting Kedarnath and Yamunotri. Health experts have advised travellers to allow at least two to three days for acclimatization before beginning the pilgrimage.
Authorities have also imposed strict traffic regulations to reduce the risk of accidents on mountain roads. Passenger vehicle movement has been prohibited between 10 pm and 4 am. Additionally, pilgrims have been advised against consuming alcohol or sleeping pills during the journey.
